Godot's Day was started in March of 2007 as an idea by me, Corinne, as an excuse to send something through the mail.
The date was argued for several weeks with my friend CJ over when to celebrate this random holiday, until it was decided to be April 13th. It was a Friday.
CJ discovered that on April 13th, 1906, a Friday (101 years before my holiday started) Samuel Beckett was born. He was most famous for his play Waiting for Godot. The character "Godot" never makes an appearance in the play. There is a section about him on that same page right here. I think you can deduce the rest on the source of it's name.
Soon,
To give you an example... My parent's first date was February 13th, 1976. A Friday. They've been married for 33 years.
Why Friday the 13th?
Godot's Day is... every Friday the Thirteenth, which can happen between once and three times within one year period. There is a list of them until 2050 at this blog.
Godot's Day is a spit-in-the-face to superstition, to help turn around the fear of the day, as well as the number 13.
The first known written evidence of fear over a Friday the Thirteenth was in 1869, exactly 140 years ago, today in the biography of Gioachino Rossini:
" [Rossini] was surrounded to the last by admiring and affectionate friends; and if it be true that, like so many other Italians, he regarded Friday as an unlucky day, and thirteen as an unlucky number, it is remarkable that on Friday, the 13th of November, he died."
Please take a look at the link to Friday the 13th, it reveals a lot about modern cultures.

Go-what?
Godot's Day is pronounced any way you want it to be pronounced, because the name isn't the point. In it's original form, it is pronounced /ˈɡɒdoʊ/ (goh-dough), or the Americanized /ɡəˈdoʊ/ (gh'-dough), or even how I tend to pronounce it as /ˈɡoʊdɑt/ (go-dot).
The point?
Godot's Day is a gift-giving holiday... without the gifts. With hand-made cards (or purchased cards, personalized for each recipient) and lots of stamps. The point? Aside from the fact all people love to get things in the mail... The point is similar to that of Christmas, without the religious affiliations and the decorations. To reunite friends all over the world, to get excited about something just for one little thing. The point is to give an excuse to communication, to give way to creative impulses, to forget why material gifts are generally wanted more than a card with a drawing in it. To sort of forget material gifts at all.
The whole point of Godot's Day is just for the fun of it. I don't want it to be an obligation, I don't want people to feel bad about getting cards, but not giving them, nor do I want people to feel bad about giving cards but not getting. It's not about how many cards you get versus how many you send. It's about having fun doing it, and getting excited about reactions from others, even if you didn't get any.
As creator of the holiday, even I'm lucky to get one. But I don't do it to get something in return, I do it to spread the love, so to speak, without the sticky mess usually implied by that statement.
Also...
And on a personal note for those of you who might be curious... I hope to be married Friday, July 13th, 2012.
Friday, an "unlucky" day.
July (7), a "lucky" number/month.
the 13th, an "unlucky" number/day.
2012 (12), a "lucky" number (see the link to Friday the 13th).
...or at least 12 is a lucky number unless you ask the Mayans and their 12/2012 theory.

And yes.
Please stop stalking me. I knew I saw a flash of blond hair and glowing eyes outside my window the other day...
and what do you mean you saw me?! I was being so careful!
